Bears Blast Bills in Preseason Week 2: The Positives and Negatives

ree

The Chicago Bears steamrolled the Buffalo Bills in preseason Week 2, shutting them out 38-0 at Soldier Field. Now, it’s preseason, and we all know it “doesn’t count”—but that doesn’t mean there weren’t plenty of things to get excited about (and a few things to keep in mind).

Caleb Williams Looks the Part

All eyes were on Caleb Williams, and the second year QB come out ready to prove he belongs. After Tyler Scott gave us a scare by muffing the opening kickoff and pinning Chicago on their own 3-yard line, Williams stepped in and instantly took control.

He completed his first four passes and finished the opening drive 5-for-6 with 93 yards and a touchdown. More importantly, he looked confident. Williams was reading defenses fast, making decisions without hesitation, and getting the ball out quickly. Add in the fact that the offensive line actually gave him a clean pocket—a massive upgrade from last year—and suddenly the Bears’ offense looked smooth.

Tyson Bagent Keeps the Train Rolling

Williams wasn’t the only QB who showed up. Tyson Bagent had himself a day, playing into the third quarter and finishing 13-of-22 for 196 yards and a touchdown. What stood out was his ability to make a variety of throws—short, medium, and everything in between. He looked calm and collected, moving the offense efficiently and showing why he’s a valuable piece of this roster.

Ian Wheeler: The RB Room Just Got Even Harder

The running back battle is officially heating up, and Ian Wheeler might be forcing his way into the conversation. He carried the ball 19 times for 80 yards and two touchdowns, showing off a mix of power and elusiveness. He broke tackles, made defenders miss, and added some slick shifty moves that kept drives alive.

The only downside? This RB room is loaded. There’s simply no way to keep everyone, and it’s going to hurt watching good players get cut. Wheeler is making it really hard on the front office—in the best way possible.

Luther Burden Continues to Shine

Rookie wideout Luther Burden keeps turning heads. He finished with 3 catches for 49 yards, but it wasn’t just the stats—it was the way he played. For a guy his size, he’s surprisingly quick and shifty. He also laid down some big-time blocks in the run game, which is exactly the kind of gritty work coaches love. Burden looks like he’s going to be a problem for defenses once the real games begin.

Austin Booker Keeps Growing

On defense, rookie pass rusher Austin Booker continues to show his growth. He notched another sack against Buffalo, along with two solo tackles. He’s been steadily improving each week, and if that trajectory continues, he could carve out a real role in the rotation this season.

Wrapping It Up

The Bears couldn’t have asked for a much better preseason showing: Caleb Williams was sharp, Bagent looked reliable, Wheeler ran wild, Burden showed off his versatility, and Booker kept stacking plays on defense. The 38-0 score may not count in the standings, but it counts in terms of momentum and confidence.

Sure, there are still tough decisions ahead—especially in the running back room—but right now, it feels like things are finally starting to click in Chicago.
