Steamwheelers Snap Losing Streak With Narrow Win Over Tucson
The Quad City Steamwheelers earned a much-needed victory on Saturday night, defeating the Tucson Sugar Skulls 40–38 in a tightly contested matchup at the Vibrant Arena.
While the win gets Quad City back into the win column in the Indoor Football League, it was far from a clean performance. The Steamwheelers once again struggled offensively in the second half and were forced to survive a late push from Tucson in a game that came down to the final defensive sequence.
The victory moves Quad City forward, but questions about consistency on both sides of the ball remain.
First Half Shootout Sets the Tone Early
Both teams came out slow offensively, failing to score on their opening drives. But once the rhythm settled in, the game quickly turned into a back-and-forth shootout.
Veteran Keyvan Rudd opened the scoring for the Steamwheelers, rushing for a 3-yard touchdown to record his 100th career touchdown.
From there, both teams traded scores throughout the first half before Jorrod Ware made a major impact. Ware hauled in a 41-yard touchdown reception just before halftime, helping Quad City take a 28–21 lead into the break.
Steamwheelers Take Control — Then Nearly Let It Slip Away
Quad City came out of halftime strong, with Ware striking again on a 12-yard rushing touchdown, extending the lead to 35–21.
At that point, it looked like the Steamwheelers might finally put together a complete performance.
But the offense stalled from there.
Tucson responded with a rushing touchdown from Toles and a key interception by Twardosky after a slightly late throw from quarterback DaQuan Neal intended for Quian Williams.
The turnover led to a field goal that cut the lead to 35–31.
Quad City answered with a field goal to go up 38–31, but Tucson responded immediately with a quick touchdown drive to tie the game at 38–38.
Late in the fourth quarter, the Steamwheelers attempted to run the clock down for a potential game-winning kick. After a strong drive led by Neal, Jan Bogden missed a late field goal attempt, giving Tucson one final chance.
On the first play of the drive, defensive pressure from Charles Rosser forced quarterback Kendrick Gladney into intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a game-winning safety.
That play sealed the 40–38 victory for Quad City.
Players That Stood Out
🔥 Offensive MVP — Jorrod Ware
Ware delivered a breakout performance with two total touchdowns (one rushing, one receiving), finishing with 41 receiving yards and 27 rushing yards. He was the most consistent offensive weapon all night and helped stabilize a struggling offense.
💪 Defensive Standout — Charles Rosser
Rosser recorded two sacks and four total tackles, including the game-winning safety that decided the contest. His pressure late in the game completely changed the outcome.
👀 Defensive Honorable Mention — KJ Trujillo
In his first Indoor Football League game, Trujillo made an immediate impact with an interception and 20-yard return, showing promise for the secondary moving forward.
What Went Right — And What Still Needs Work
There were positives for the Quad City Steamwheelers, especially on defense.
✅ Defensive Improvements
Quad City made strong halftime adjustments and held Tucson to just 79 passing yards, one of their best secondary performances of the season. The defense looked more disciplined and less reliant on turnovers, showing encouraging progress.
⚠️ Offensive Inconsistency Continues
Once again, the Steamwheelers struggled to sustain offensive production in the second half, scoring just 12 points after halftime. While the offense starts fast, adjustments after halftime remain a major issue.
⚠️ Special Teams Concerns
Coverage issues and inconsistent field position continue to put pressure on both the offense and defense. Limiting opponent starting field position will be critical moving forward.
Despite the concerns, the win could serve as an important confidence boost heading into a crucial stretch of the season.
Looking Ahead: Bye Week Reset Before Vegas Road Test
The Steamwheelers will now enter a bye week before traveling to face the Vegas Knight Hawks, the current Western Division leaders in the Indoor Football League.
The Knight Hawks have been one of the league’s top teams this season, entering the matchup with just one loss, making them one of the toughest opponents on the schedule.
For Quad City, the bye week is an opportunity to reset and address ongoing issues—particularly second-half offensive struggles and special teams execution—before facing an elite opponent on the road.
If the Steamwheelers want to build real momentum, their response coming out of the bye week will be critical.
Final Thoughts
The Quad City Steamwheelers got the win they needed, but not without drama. At 3–6 on the season, the team still has work to do, but Saturday night showed flashes of potential—especially on defense and in key late-game moments.
Now the focus shifts to consistency, execution, and preparation for a major test against one of the best teams in the league.
