Slow Starts
This week in college football we saw plenty of slow starts. While it is week 1 and we expect to
see some teams still trying to find their footing, but it was interesting to see some of the bigger
schools struggle early on. I think we will see some of the group of 5 conferences picking up
wins against some power 5 schools. We already saw Tulane dominate Northwestern and we
nearly saw Rutgers falling to Ohio. Even though most would consider these to be the bottom
feeders of the Big Ten, I still think these power 5 conference teams expect to beat these teams
soundly.
Crazy Upsets
As always, we get some crazy upsets in college football and week 1 did not disappoint. To
start off Boise State who was ranked 25th got dominated by USF 34-7. I do believe Boise
State was overrated and USF is a solid team. Also, we cannot talk about upsets without
mentioning FSU putting together a solid win against the 8th ranked Alabama 31-17. Now this
FSU team would have been a tough matchup for any team week 1 and they had a lot to prove
after coming off a horrible season last year. Their transfer quarterback looked good and the
team as a whole looked good, but you cannot overlook how undisciplined the Alabama team
looked throughout the night.
Group of 5 favorite
Now, as the season goes on and the playoff picture starts to develop, there is going to be a
group of 5 teams that will have a guaranteed spot in the playoffs and a chance to shock the
world. Here are my teams from these conferences that have the best chance to secure a spot
in the playoffs thanks to the new playoff system. Starting off, I like this USF team coming out of
the All American Conference (AAC). Their QB was trucking people, they were making special
team plays, and the defense was getting stops on 4th down. All of this against a team that was
just in the playoffs last year. I also like Tulane out of the AAC conference as well. They have
been a solid program for a few years now and with their transfer QB they could make a run at
the playoffs. Lastly, UNLV out of the Mountain West Conference (MWC). They have started the
season 2-0 and if they manage to beat UCLA this weekend I think we could see them running
through the MWC this season.
Week 2 preview
There are some big matchups in week 2 with 15 Michigan vs. 18 Oklahoma. You also have the
Cy-Hawk Series with 16 Iowa State vs. Iowa. A lot of eyes will be watching how all the teams
that lost big
games this past week will rebound. Those teams including Alabama, Clemson,
Notre Dame and Texas. Each of these teams having easier opponents this week, but still going
to be important to see how these teams respond to adversity early on in the season.
