Dinosaur Jr. Brings a Blast of '80s & '90s Alternative Rock to the Capitol Theatre

This past Thursday, July 30, the Capitol Theatre was transported back to the heyday of alternative rock as Dinosaur Jr. delivered a loud, guitar-driven performance that reminded everyone why they remain one of the genre's most influential bands.

From the moment the trio stepped on stage, they wasted no time making an impression. Opening with three straight songs of pure instrumental energy, Dinosaur Jr. immediately set the tone for the night. Thick guitar riffs, thunderous drum fills, and a bass line you could feel in your chest created an atmosphere that demanded your attention from the very first note.

Visually, the performance felt like stepping into a '90s alternative rock concert. The stage remained drenched in cool blue lighting while green accents washed across the back wall, creating a nostalgic, grunge-inspired aesthetic. Combined with towering speaker stacks and J Mascis' intentionally understated vocals, the entire show felt authentic to the band's signature style rather than a polished modern production.

Rather than treating feedback as noise, Mascis transforms it into another instrument, weaving it seamlessly into his solos and creating sounds that seem almost impossible to reproduce. Watching him perform from just a few feet away only reinforced the level of mastery he brings to every performance.

Behind the kit, Murph provided the backbone of the band with remarkable consistency. He has a relaxed, almost effortless style that makes difficult rhythms appear easy, yet every beat is delivered with precision and power. More importantly, he always looks like he's genuinely enjoying himself, and that enthusiasm carries through every song.

As a photographer, having the opportunity to capture Dinosaur Jr. from the photo pit made the experience even more memorable. Seeing the chemistry between the three musicians from such a close vantage point offered a new appreciation for the band's musicianship. Every expression, every guitar solo, and every burst of

energy became another moment worth capturing.
