Steamwheelers Fall to Pirates as Offensive Struggles Continue

The Quad City Steamwheelers dropped another tough matchup, falling 45–26 to the Orlando Pirates in a game that once again exposed ongoing issues with offensive consistency, special teams execution, and defensive adjustments.

While Quad City showed early energy and flashed potential in moments throughout the game, the offense struggled to maintain rhythm after the opening stretch. Defensively, the team continues to rotate personnel along the defensive line in search of consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks, but Orlando was able to control much of the game after the opening quarter.

How the Game Played Out

The night began with promise for Quad City.

The defense came out strong, forcing the Pirates into negative eight yards on their opening drive, setting up an early Steamwheelers touchdown for a 6–0 lead.

After both teams exchanged turnovers, Orlando struck first in the second quarter with a touchdown of their own. Quad City responded quickly when Judd Roberts connected with Quian Williams on a 25-yard touchdown pass, giving the Steamwheelers a 12–7 lead.

However, missed conversion attempts continued to hurt Quad City’s ability to extend momentum.

Orlando took control before halftime, with Pooka Williams punching in a rushing touchdown followed by a Josh Gable field goal, giving the Pirates a 17–12 halftime lead.

The second half belonged almost entirely to Orlando.

The Pirates extended their lead with a combination of field goals, touchdowns, and even a safety early in the fourth quarter, pushing the score to 29–12.

Quad City briefly responded when Jarrod Ware scored his second rushing touchdown of the game with 3:20 remaining, cutting the deficit to 36–20, but a failed onside kick gave Orlando short field position.

The Pirates quickly capitalized, followed by a kickoff “deuce” from Gable, pushing the game out of reach at 45–20.

Quarterback Ivan Corbin led a late scoring drive to close the game, but the final score settled at 45–26.

Players That Stood Out

Offensive MVP — Ivan Corbin

With DaQuan Neal sidelined, Ivan Corbin split quarterback duties and provided a spark on the ground. While he completed just 3 of 7 passes for 26 yards, he added 68 rushing yards on 8 carries, including a 40-yard explosive run and two rushing touchdowns.

His mobility gave the offense a different dimension and showed upside for future use in the system.

Defensive Standout — KeShaun Moore

Once again, KeShaun Moore was a disruptive force on the defensive line. Even without recording a sack, Moore consistently pressured Orlando’s quarterback and forced attention from multiple blockers on nearly every snap.

He remains the most consistent presence on a defensive front still searching for its identity through rotation and adjustments.

What Went Right — And What Still Needs Work

There are still a few positives to take away, even in a loss.

Young quarterbacks stepping into expanded roles showed flashes of upside, giving the coaching staff something to evaluate moving forward. The defensive line, while not producing sacks, did generate pressure and create disruptive moments. Cam Harrell also made an impact early with an interception that briefly energized the defense.

However, the list of concerns remains significant.

Special teams continue to cost the team valuable points, and in a league where margins are small, those missed opportunities add up quickly.

Offensively, the biggest issue remains consistency in the middle portions of games. The Steamwheelers continue to start strong but struggle to adjust once opponents settle in, leading to long stretches without production.

Defensively, breakdowns in the secondary continue to show up, with coverage assignments breaking down and receivers finding space far too often.

Even the home environment felt subdued at times, with a lighter crowd presence contributing to a quieter atmosphere inside Vibrant Arena.

For a team with as much talent as Quad City, the inconsistency has been the most frustrating part of the season.

Looking Ahead: Bye Week Reset and Playoff Push Begins Now

The playoff picture for the Quad City Steamwheelers is still within reach, but the margin for error is now gone. The focus heading into the bye week is simple: just make the playoffs.

At this point, the path likely requires winning out and getting help, but the opportunity is still alive if the team can find consistency down the stretch.

One major boost is expected soon with the return of quarterback DaQuan Neal, who is recovering from a hamstring injury. Neal confirmed postgame that he is trending in the right direction, saying: “I’m feeling better. I’ll be back next game.”

That return would immediately stabilize the offense and bring leadership back to a unit that has struggled to maintain rhythm.

After the bye week, Quad City returns home to face the Fishers Freight in a matchup that carries real playoff implications for both teams. With both sides fighting for positioning late in the season, it will feel like a must-win environment.
