It’s been a tough couple of weeks for the Iowa Heartlanders as they faced one of the hardest stretches of their early season schedule. Hosting the division-leading Fort Wayne Komets for three games over Halloween weekend, the Heartlanders were looking to prove they could hang with one of the ECHL’s top teams.
Unfortunately, Fort Wayne came to Coralville and reminded everyone why they’re sitting atop the division.
Across the three-game set at Xtream Arena, the Komets swept the series, outscoring Iowa 11–3. The Heartlanders were shut out twice — 4–0 in the opener and 2–0 in the finale — with their lone offensive spark coming on Halloween night in a 5–3 loss. Despite the tough results, the Heartlanders showed flashes of the aggressive, high-effort play that’s made them competitive this season.
But if the Komets series was a reminder of how tough the division can be, the following weekend was all about showing some resilience. The Heartlanders hit the road for a three-game trip — two against the Cincinnati Cyclones and a Sunday showdown with the Toledo Walleye.
Friday night in Cincinnati didn’t start the way anyone hoped. The Cyclones came out swinging, scoring nine goals on the night to cruise past the Heartlanders, who managed just two of their own. The game was a chippy one, featuring 14 total penalties — including a couple of scraps that brought some old-school hockey energy back to the ice.
But Saturday? That was a completely different story.
The Heartlanders flipped the script in dominant fashion, taking control from the opening puck drop and never looking back. Jack O’Brien and Jaxon Nelson — the team’s offensive leaders — were on fire, combining for five of Iowa’s eight goals, with O’Brien netting a hat trick. Goalie Rylie Mercer had one of his best outings of the season, stopping everything that came his way through two periods and only allowing two goals late in the third. The 8–2 win was exactly the response the Heartlanders needed after a tough week.
Now, Iowa looks to carry that momentum into tonight’s game against the Toledo Walleye, who sit just behind them in fourth place in the Central Division standings. It’s an early-season battle that could have real implications for positioning down the line, and if Saturday night was any indication, the Heartlanders are ready to fight their way back into form.
