Opening Day Is Here: Steamwheelers Begin Season in Fishers

Opening day has finally arrived, and the Quad City Steamwheelers will start their season on the road as they travel to Fishers to take on the Fishers Freight, a team entering just its second season in the Indoor Football League.

The Freight had a strong debut campaign last year, finishing 7–9 but proving to be far more competitive than many expansion teams typically are. Fishers found their rhythm late in the season, going 5–2 in the second half and closing the year on an impressive five-game winning streak that helped establish a solid foundation for the young franchise.

That said, the Steamwheelers handled business in the matchup last season, winning all three meetings against the Freight. And if the offseason is any indication, Quad City may be even stronger heading into this year.

There’s also a renewed level of excitement surrounding the league itself. The Indoor Football League made significant changes to its game-day production and broadcast distribution, with games now being carried on the Yahoo Sports Network and Overnght Media. The increased visibility should make it easier for fans across the country to tune in and follow the action, helping grow both the league and the passionate fanbases that support it.

With a familiar opponent, a growing rivalry, and a league looking to expand its reach, the stage is set for an exciting start to the Steamwheelers’ season.

Players to Watch This Season

The offseason was a big one for the Quad City Steamwheelers, who made it clear they intend to build on last season’s success by bringing back key veterans while adding some major talent through free agency.

Among the returning leaders are quarterback DaQuan Neal, defensive standout KeShaun Moore, and veteran presence Joe Krall. The team also made significant additions, including former Green Bay Blizzard cornerback Kevin Ranson II, who played a key role in a defense that helped carry Green Bay to the championship game last season. On the offensive side, the Wheelers added one of the league’s most dangerous playmakers in Quian Williams, a First Team All-IFL wide receiver who instantly upgrades an already explosive offense.

Here are a few players fans should keep a close eye on when the season kicks off.

DaQuan Neal – The Leader Under Center

Quarterback DaQuan Neal is the engine that makes the Steamwheelers offense go. Last season he threw for just under 2,000 yards while posting an incredible 45 touchdowns to just 8 interceptions, finishing with a 185.1 passer efficiency rating. Beyond the numbers, Neal brings leadership and composure in the pocket, consistently making smart decisions and keeping the offense moving.

KeShaun Moore – The Defensive Disruptor

Defensive lineman KeShaun Moore was one of the most dominant defenders in the league last season. Moore led the entire Indoor Football League with 9 sacks while also finishing sixth in tackles with 102. His ability to disrupt both the pass and run game makes him a constant threat for opposing offenses, and by all accounts he’s coming into this season even more motivated to take the team to another level.

Chima Dunga – A Breakout Candidate

Lining up next to Moore on the defensive line is Chima Dunga, a player who could be poised for a breakout season. After speaking with him this offseason, it’s clear Dunga has been putting in the work to elevate his game. If his offseason preparation translates to the field, the Steamwheelers defensive front could become one of the most dangerous units in the league.

Quian Williams – The Offensive Game-Changer

Few additions around the league were as impactful as the signing of Quian Williams. The All-IFL receiver led the league last season with 89 receptions, 18 more than the next closest player. He also averaged 74.5 receiving yards per game, finished with 1,118 yards, and scored a league-leading 26 touchdowns. Williams is the definition of a workhorse receiver and should immediately become one of Neal’s favorite targets.

Jordan Vesey – The Versatile Playmaker

Returning wide receiver Jordan Vesey was already one of the top receivers in the league last season, finishing top five in total yards with 701 and touchdowns with 15. Vesey also proved to be a versatile weapon, averaging 5.6 yards per carry and scoring four rushing touchdowns. With defenses now needing to account for both Vesey and Williams, Vesey could actually find more opportunities this season as defenses struggle to cover both threats.

A Team Hungry for a Championship

After falling just short last season in the conference championship against the Green Bay Blizzard, the Quad City Steamwheelers enter the new season with one thing on their minds: finishing the job.

Last year’s deep playoff run showed just how dangerous this team can be when everything clicks. But instead of standing pat, the Steamwheelers attacked the offseason, bringing back key leaders while adding major talent across the roster. The result is a lineup that, on paper, could be one of the most complete teams in the Indoor Football League.

With star power on both sides of the ball and a locker room full of players determined to take the next step, expectations are high heading into the season. If the early signs are any indication, the Steamwheelers have all the pieces in place to make another serious championship run.

And it all starts Saturday afternoon.

Kickoff is set for 3:00 PM Central, and fans who can’t make it to the game can catch the action live on the Yahoo Sports Network as the Steamwheelers open the season against the Fishers Freight.

After months of waiting, the road to a championship finally begins.
