Steamwheelers Second-Half Struggles Lead to Loss Against Barnstormers

A strong first half wasn’t enough as Quad City fails to find consistency in rivalry matchup.

Steamwheelers Struggle to Find Rhythm in Loss to Barnstormers

The Quad City Steamwheelers fell to the Iowa Barnstormers 35–25 in a frustrating outing that highlighted offensive struggles throughout the game in the Indoor Football League.

From the start, the Steamwheelers offense never seemed to find its footing. Multiple drives stalled out before they could develop, with the Barnstormers defense consistently stepping in to halt any momentum Quad City tried to build. Whether it was pressure up front or missed opportunities downfield, the offense struggled to establish any kind of rhythm.

For a team that entered the season with high expectations, this performance raises concerns. If the Steamwheelers want to keep their season on track, adjustments will need to come quickly before things start to slip further out of reach.

Key Moments That Shifted the Game

For a while, it looked like the Quad City Steamwheelers had things under control.

The first half was a strong showing for Quad City, with the offense finding ways to score in multiple phases of the game. Jan Bogden got things going with a field goal, while Jordan Vesey added a touchdown reception to help build momentum. The Steamwheelers were able to mix in different scoring methods and took a lead into halftime, putting themselves in a solid position.

That momentum carried briefly into the second half when Bogden delivered a kickoff deuce, extending the lead and giving the impression that Quad City might continue to build on their advantage.

But from that point on, everything stalled.

The Steamwheelers failed to score another offensive point for the remainder of the game, while the Iowa Barnstormers began to take control. What started as a balanced and productive first half quickly turned into a one-sided second half, as Quad City’s early success faded and Iowa capitalized on the shift in momentum.

Players That Stood Out

While the result wasn’t what the Quad City Steamwheelers were hoping for, there were still some bright spots—particularly on the defensive side of the ball.

The defensive line showed real promise, applying consistent pressure and making life difficult for the Iowa Barnstormers offense. After being a healthy scratch last week, Chima Dunga made the most of his opportunity, recording a sack and making his presence felt throughout the game.

As a unit, the defensive front recorded the team’s first sack of the season while also generating multiple tackles for loss. They did a solid job disrupting the run game and putting pressure on a young Barnstormers quarterback.

However, the bigger issue remains the lack of cohesion across the team.

What Went Wrong for Quad City

For the Quad City Steamwheelers, this loss ultimately came down to one core issue: a lack of complementary football.

The offense, which showed promise in the first half, completely stalled after the break. Drives that once ended in points turned into missed opportunities, with the unit unable to adjust once the Iowa Barnstormers defense tightened up.

At the same time, while the defense had strong moments—especially up front—it wasn’t enough to carry the team for four full quarters. When the offense struggles to stay on the field and produce points, it puts added pressure on the defense to be nearly perfect.

The Steamwheelers aren’t lacking talent—they’re lacking synchronization. Both sides of the ball have yet to click at the same time, and until that happens, putting together a complete performance will remain a challenge.

Looking Ahead: A Tough Test in Green Bay

The Quad City Steamwheelers now turn their attention to a tough road matchup against the Green Bay Blizzard, one of the top teams in the Indoor Football League.

It’s a critical moment for Quad City. Getting back into the win column is becoming more urgent, and while the Steamwheelers have already proven they can beat Green Bay earlier this season, this matchup presents a much bigger challenge on the road.

Head coach Cory Ross will continue working to build confidence within this group, and the pieces are clearly there. The talent hasn’t disappeared, and the team has already shown flashes of what it can be at its best.

But consistency remains the issue.

It’s one thing to have the recipe to win—it’s another to execute it for a full game. Until the Steamwheelers can put everything together, it will be difficult to turn potential into results.

Still, this upcoming game could be the turning point.

If Quad City can finally put together a complete performance, there’s no better time to do it than against one of the league’s best.
